~~~~~
Several dehaians were already waiting for us when we reached the flatlands above the canyon, and they nodded respectfully at the sight of Kreyus. While he swam over to speak with them, I hung back with Zeke and Noah, and tried not to fidget uncomfortably when Venika remained only a few yards away, watching us.
Hate really was a mild word for how that woman looked at me. Of all the Vetorians, she was the only one who seemed to have no issue with glaring at me like she’d cut my throat if she could.
It was strange.
And worrisome.
I felt Noah tense beside me.
“What?” I whispered, not looking away from Venika.
He didn’t answer.
I glanced over quickly to find his gaze twitching across the water. “Noah?”
“I thought… maybe to the north when we just came up here. But…”
My heart started racing all over again. “But what?”
Noah exhaled, shaking his head. “Nothing.” He glanced to me. “You suppressing that whatever-it-is?”
“Best I can.”
His mouth tightened as if he wished there was more to be done, but he nodded.
I drew a breath, trying to calm down.
It wasn’t easy.
A dozen more dehaians rose from the ravine behind us. At the sight of them, Kreyus motioned for us to come over to join him. With the other dehaians trailing us, we swam over to the group of Vetorians.
“Braxus, report,” Kreyus prompted.
A beefy, fiery-haired dehaian who looked like everything you’d cross the street to avoid swam from the group behind us. He bore a patch over one eye and on his brown scales, old scars that looked blatantly like knife wounds cut strange patterns. Two more Vetorians followed him, both of them possessing enough similarity to him in their appearance that I guessed these were the brothers Kreyus had mentioned earlier.
“At the moment,” Braxus said, his voice deep and quiet, “the soldiers appear not to have noticed our presence. They’re spread out from here to Lycera, however, moving in shifts to patrol the border. I recommend sticking to this side of the canyon and then heading south when it ends. The terrain is fairly flat from here to Lycera, however. We needed to hide more than once while scouting, and I suspect we will on the way back again as well.”
Kreyus nodded. “In that case, Chloe, the prince and their friend will stay by Venika and me, while the rest of you divide up so you’re close to someone equipped with cover as well. I want two groups, one in front and one behind us, and until the canyon is past, the caves are the first point of retreat.”
He glanced around quickly, as if checking for questions from his people, and then he nodded. “Go.”
Half the Vetorians spread out and started along the line of the canyon’s edge, heading south, while Braxus and the remainder hovered nearby, waiting for Kreyus to move.
Kreyus looked to me. I couldn’t tell what he seemed to be confirming. Without a word, he nodded to Venika.
She swam after the others. We followed her, with the remaining Vetorians coming behind us.
